1.3: Changing the pattern using layout blocks

By selecting a pattern and a style you will also have set up a full-featured videosite. But you might want to move content around in your design, enable some extra features or tweak configurations bit. This is where layout blocks come in.

First of all: What are layout blocks?

Layout blocks are building block for your 23 Video site. To modify the layout, log in and click Design → Layout − and note that you'll need administrator access to the site in order to see these options.

Here, you'll see a grid overview of the site's layout:

Each of the items on the grid can be moved around, configured or deleted using their icons:

Drag the block:
You can drag the block anywhere with in the grid. For example, you can move the Search box block into the header or the footer simply by dragging it around and clicking the Save layout button afterwards.

Configure the block:
Each block can be customised through configuration. For example, you can control which sharing options are included in the Share block (Twitter, Facebook, embed, mail etc.). Or you can change the headline of the Channels block to 'Themes' if you prefer that terminology.
Obviously, the configuration options vary from block to block. We describe each block in details here, but we still encourage you to learn by doing: Try out the different settings for yourself, and be sure to ask if you're confused about a specific option or need more options.

Please do also note, that entering the configuration for a single block will loose your changes to the overall layout, so in the case that you have made changes, do remember to press Save the layout before proceeding to editing a single block's configuration.

Delete the block:
Deleting a block removes if from the layout entirely. For example, you might not want to include a Subscrribe block at all − if so, simply delete it. You can always re-add the block later if you need it.

Adding new blocks

23 Video offers a number of different blocks, and − depending on the theme you've selected − your default layout only includes a subset of those. If you want to add extra features to your site such as play lists, ratings, tag clouds or video download links, you will need to add that block to your design.

Adding new blocks to the layout is easy: Select a type of block from the drop-down box and click the add new block button.
Now, name your block and possibly change some of the default settings for the block before clicking the Save block button to add the block's content to your design.

After the block has been added, you'll find it in the bottom of the right sidebar. If that isn't the perfect location, just move it where it's supposed to be.

Adding your own content with HTML blocks

In general, each block lets you include a specific kind of content from 23 Video: a list of video thumbnails, a video player, a list of links to channels, a set of sharing options, a customizable tag cloud, or something similar − but by using the HTML Block option you can add your own content.

HTML blocks work exactly like all other block in your design: You can place them wherever you like, you can control which pages they're displayed on, you can configure them, and you can delete them.

But these blocks also serve two other purposes: You can include your own HTML content (such as a banner ad or a list of recent news items from your corporate web site), and you can use them for including external stylesheet and ressource files (such as referencing the CSS from your existing web site or linking to an RSS feed).

The markup you input into your HTML blocks is included exactly as-is; we don't add any extra markup or modify the content in any way — furthermore we don't wrap them in any content container either. This means that the content will be valid when included in the <head> element − and that you can even place a block with opening HTML tags and then have the closing HTML tags later in the grid.

How does this fit in with my design?

When the front-end pages of your 23 Video site is loaded, we mesh together the content of your selected different blocks and some glue HTML. This means that the content items you've added to your layout now can be styled using CSS (and possibly with some JavaScript).

In other words: when you've dragged, dropped and configured your content blocks, you'll be able to style your 23 Video site exactly how you want it using standard web technologies.
